Universal Symbols

There are lots of Symbols that transcend language. Just being educated and alive means you know the meaning of these signs.

The heart has this universal meaning of love which is always a good thing. Then the symbol gets co-opted into marketing. Here is the sign for one of the 7/11 competitor.

In Chinese the character for heart is "xin" which can be coupled with the picture of the heart like this sign. This sign for a gym says: "I love power."

This sign has to count as a twofer, a heart and a smiley face.

Music has it's own symbols:

I tried playing a piano piece lately and had the ignominious experience of having a 9-year-old girl point out that I had forgotten the key signature and had ignored playing all the flats.

I guess Yamaha makes more than just motorcycles.

Pharmacy

The symbol for prohibited is the red circle with a slash through it. Here we have a massage clinic where pain is prohibited.

I like this sign for X-rays, because when X rays were discovered they were unknown, so Roentgen the discover, called them X-rays because the math symbol for the unknown is always X.

And we have the international symbol for lasting commitment.

Here on a motorcycle seat.

Here on a brand name for furniture.

And they may not be golden but they are certainly arches.

  1. I never knew that about X-rays! Interesting story about how they were named.
